What began as an unexpected favor for a fellow photographer became a lifelong calling.
Santa Albert’s journey into the red suit began with an early encouragement toward the stage. In seventh grade, his performimg arts teacher, Sharon Belshaw, suggested that he consider a career in performance after he co-starred in Bye Bye Birdie in a role made famous by Paul Lynde. His creative interests later led him to photography. In 1983, a fellow photographer asked Albert to help with an assignment at a shopping mall. He arrived carrying his camera equipment, expecting to work behind the lens. Instead, she directed him to a dressing room where a Santa suit was waiting. When Albert reminded her that he had come to help with the photography, she simply replied, “Get dressed.” He did—and was immediately bitten by what he affectionately calls “the red suit bug.” Soon afterward, Albert had his first Santa suit made and began making local appearances in 1984. What started as an unexpected mall assignment grew into a lifelong calling that combines performance, photography, storytelling, and genuine human connection.
